Health Education

The mission of the Health Education Department is to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and decision-making abilities necessary to achieve and maintain lifelong physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being. Through comprehensive, evidence-based health education, students develop the capacity to make informed choices, establish healthy behaviors, and become responsible, productive members of their communities.

Core Objectives of the Health Education Department

  • Promote Lifelong Health and Wellness
    Provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to make healthy choices that support lifelong well-being.
  • Develop Health Literacy
    Enable students to access, understand, evaluate, and apply health information to make informed decisions.
  • Support Mental and Emotional Wellness
    Foster self-awareness, resilience, stress management, and positive coping strategies to support mental health.
  • Encourage Responsible Decision-Making
    Teach students to assess risks, evaluate consequences, and make safe, healthy, and responsible choices.
  • Promote Healthy Relationships
    Develop communication, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills that support respectful and positive relationships.
  • Prevent Risky Behaviors
    Educate students about substance abuse prevention, injury prevention, disease prevention, and other health-related risks.
  • Advocate for Personal and Community Health
    Encourage students to take responsibility for their own health while understanding the impact of health decisions on families and communities.
  • Foster Safety and Wellness Awareness
    Promote personal safety, digital citizenship, violence prevention, and healthy lifestyle practices.
  • Support Whole-Child Development
    Address the physical, emotional, social, and mental dimensions of health to help students thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Create an Inclusive and Supportive Learning Environment
    Ensure all students feel respected, valued, and supported as they learn about health and wellness topics.

To develop health-literate students who possess the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed decisions, lead healthy lifestyles, build positive relationships, and contribute to healthier schools and communities

  • Promote Student Health and Wellness
    Support the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of all students to maximize their ability to learn and succeed.
  • Ensure a Safe and Healthy School Environment
    Maintain health standards, safety protocols, and preventive practices that protect students, staff, and visitors.
  • Provide Quality Health Services
    Deliver comprehensive nursing and health services that address student health needs, manage chronic conditions, and respond to emergencies.
  • Advance Health Education and Awareness
    Collaborate with educators to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed health decisions and develop healthy lifestyles.
  • Promote Disease Prevention and Public Health Practices
    Monitor immunization compliance, communicable disease prevention, health screenings, and adherence to local and state health regulations.
  • Support Mental Health and Emotional Well-Being
    Work collaboratively with school counselors, psychologists, and community agencies to identify and support students' mental health needs.
  • Strengthen Family and Community Partnerships
    Foster communication and collaboration with families, healthcare providers, and community organizations to support student health and wellness.
  • Ensure Equity and Access to Health Resources
    Advocate for all students to have access to appropriate health services, accommodations, and resources necessary for success.
  • Support Student Attendance and Academic Success
    Reduce health-related barriers to learning by addressing student health concerns that impact attendance, engagement, and performance.
  • Maintain Compliance with Health Regulations and Best Practices
    Ensure adherence to federal, state, and local health mandates while continuously improving health services through evidence-based practices.

    The Innerbody - Online anatomy lessons containing more than 100 illustrations of the human body. Have your kids try the interactive portion of the site.

    Neuroscience for Kids - This is a terrific site for you and your students to learn about the nervous system. Includes experiments, activities and a free newsletter.

    Tobacco-Free Kids - Find out why smoking is bad for your health. Get the facts, check out special events and visit the kids corner.

    National Institutes of Health (NIH) - This useful site belongs to the National Institute of Health, which is one of the world's foremost biomedical research centers and the Federal focal point for biomedical research in the U.S. It also contains sites to numerous other medically helpful sites and includes job listings, as well.

    American Heart Association - Site of the American Heart Association, which presents a wide range of guidance about lowering your risk of heart disease and other medical links. 

    Arthritis Foundation - Home to the Arthritis Foundation, which publicizes data on arthritis and advocates research into its treatment 

    National Library of Medicine - Affiliated with Medline and the Natl. Institute of Health's Library of Medicine. Contains more than 9 million references to medical journals and includes links to information about HIV/AIDS, environmental health, and telemedicine video demos.

    National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism - Site of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism with numerous links to publications on same.

    American Journal of Clinical Nutrition - Home of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which details studies on obesity, nutrition and disease, energy metabolism, vitamins and minerals.

    Vegan Outreach - Site of Vegan Outreach, an international organization dedicated to furthering vegetarian living and an improved environment.

    HerbalGram or American Botanical Council - Site sponsored by the American Botanical Council, a nonprofit organization educating the public about beneficial herbs and plants and promoting the safe and effective use of medicinal plants. (Wholeheartedly recommend!)

    CDC Travelers' Health - Run by the Centers for Disease Control offering health info about travel destinations across the glove; recommends various vaccinations for travel to areas susceptible to specific tropical diseases..

    WebMD - A press-credentialed medical news organization whose goal is to "be the world's premiere authoritative daily news source for health and medicine." Site includes a prescription drug and herb database, a medical encyclopedia, Health-E-Meter, physician locator, resource center and sports and fitness information. Definitely worth a visit!

    The Center for Science in the Public Interest, with input from experts and parents, has developed two new resources with healthy snack ideas for parents, teachers, afterschool programs, and other caregivers.
