Drivers Education

Students who successfully complete the course will receive a New York State MV-285 Certificate of Completion approximately 3–4 weeks after the program ends. Students will be notified when their certificate is available and must sign for it when picking it up.
The MV-285 allows eligible students to schedule their road test and may qualify them for automobile insurance discounts.
Please note: Hicksville High School does not issue the 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course Certificate.
Should it be lost or misplaced it will cost $25 and take 4-6 weeks to acquire another. A third certificate will not be issued.

Students must:
- Be a resident of the Hicksville Public Schools attendance area.
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Be in good academic standing.
- Obtain a valid New York State Learner's Permit before the first class.
Students may register before receiving their learner's permit; however, no refunds will be issued if a permit is not obtained before classes begin.
Enrollment may be limited based on available classroom and driving capacity.

The New York State Education Department-approved semester program includes:
- 24 hours of classroom instruction
- 24 hours of in-car instruction, including:
- 6 hours of behind-the-wheel driving
- 18 hours of observation
The program is offered twice each year:
- Fall Semester: September–January
- Spring Semester: February–June

Class schedules vary by semester and enrollment. Instruction may include:
- Morning driving sessions before school (approximately 6:00 a.m.)
- Afternoon driving sessions after school (approximately 4:15 p.m.)
- Saturday driving sessions, if needed
Classroom lectures are held in Room 123 at Hicksville High School.
Classes are provided by East Meadow Driving School, located at 2900 Hempstead Turnpike, Levittown.
While student preferences are considered whenever possible, specific class times cannot be guaranteed.

Registration is held twice each year.
To register:
- Complete the Driver Education Registration Form.
- Obtain all required parent/guardian signatures.
- Submit the completed form, a copy of your learner's permit, and payment during the announced registration period.
Late registrations cannot be accepted. We do not allow students to choose with whom they wish to be in their cars. Students will be randomly placed into cars with other students. Please do not call and ask.

The Driver Education program fee is $675 (subject to change).

- Classroom Instruction: Room 123, Hicksville High School
- Behind-the-Wheel Instruction: Begins at Hicksville High School and utilizes local roads and parkways.
Following registration, classroom and driving schedules will be posted outside the Athletic Office and on the Driver Education webpage.
