One of the fastest growing populations of students in the Hicksville Public Schools are English language learners. Hicksville Public Schools offers English as a New Language (ENL) services to support the language acquisition process. Our English language learners arrive from all parts of the world, and are welcomed into an environment that celebrates their uniquely rich backgrounds and cultures. The ENL program is structured to support English language learners academically, socio-emotionally, and with equity. Our ENL teachers are highly qualified and exceptional professionals who go above and beyond their call of duty to ensure every student has a voice and feels supported and safe to learn the English language at their pace in their own special way while immersed in learning content.
We provide support to our English language learners (ELLs) in multiple forms according to the Commissioner's Regulations Part 154.2 which ensures high quality and equitable education. In Integrated ENL classes, students receive core content area and English language development instruction, including the use of the home/primary language as support and appropriate ELL instructional supports to enrich comprehension. Integrated ENL classes are taught by a teacher dually certified in the content area and ENL or are co-taught by a certified content area teacher and a certified ENL teacher. In stand-alone ENL classes, students receive instruction by a New York State certified teacher of English to Students of Other Languages (ESOL) in order to acquire the English language needed for success in core content areas. Stand-alone ENL is a separate time devoted to English language acquisition and English language development. The required amount of stand-alone ENL instruction depends on the English proficiency level of each student.
