Students in Burns Avenue's Fifth Grade traveled to Caumsett State Preserve on Tuesday, October 11. They spent a beautiful day learning about survival skills and cooperatively building a shelter. They also greatly enjoyed hiking through the preserve on Long Island's North Shore. Eating lunch on the grass of the north side of the mansion provided them with a stunning view of the Long Island Sound. Following lunch, they participated in many activities on the seashore. The children identified the tide, classified rocks and shells, searched for species native to the area, and observed the various landforms of the North Shore.
