The Burns Avenue Winter Concert, which was held on Tuesday, January10th, included some wonderful performances by each of the school's musical groups. The audience filled the gymnasium and they were delighted with the performances of the Band, Orchestra, Third Grade Chorus, and Fourth/Fifth Grade Chorus.
Congratulations are offered to the winners of this year's Hicksville Fire Department Fire Prevention Poster contest. As a result of their work, Christian, Emma, Hailey, Vladimir, and Lucas were invited to an awards ceremony at the Fire Department's Headquarters on Sunday, January 8th.
On Friday, January 6th, twenty-five students in Grade 4 and Grade 5 participated in the annual Burns Avenue Spelling Bee. The students had been chosen based upon their performance in classroom competitions that had previously taken place.
On Friday, December 23rd, students in Burns Avenue put on a holiday program that included singing and presentations about some of the holidays that they celebrate each year. Students also participated in a sing along and were accompanied by Mrs. Garner on the piano
This year, students in Burns Avenue donated hats, mittens, and scarves to the Giving Tree during the holiday season. The Student Council coordinated the program and donated the gifts to Long Island Cares, an organization that provides assistance to needy families on Long Island.
During the week of December 5-9, all of the students in Burns Avenue learned some of the basic skills that are involved in computer programming. Students participated in the Hour of Code which was sponsored by code.org and was part of Computer Science Education Week.
The staff of Burns Avenue recently started an incentive program to increase the amount of independent reading done at home. To do so, teachers made use of the RAZ Kids Program, which allows students to read books on their reading level and take tests to assess their understanding of the books.
On Monday, November 28, the students of Burns Avenue had the opportunity of attending a presentation by Dan Yaccarino, an award winning children’s author and illustrator. Mr. Yaccarino is the author and illustrator of over 60 books and is also the producer of the children’s television shows, “The Backyardigans” and “Oswald."
Students in Burns Avenue had a wonderful time celebrating Thanksgiving this year. The Kindergarten students sang Thanksgiving songs and participated with their parents in the making of necklaces, holiday wreaths, and cookies that looked like turkeys. Students in First Grade dressed up as Pilgrims and Native Americans and enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast.
This year, the Burns Avenue Student Council coordinated the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to help needy families in Hicksville. They ran a contest in which children deposited food in bins that were labeled with the names of special events such as Sports Jersey Day and Pajama Day.
On Monday, November 7, the students in Burns Avenue had the opportunity of voting for the officers of Student Council. On that morning, students heard campaign speeches by the candidates for President, Vice-President, and Secretary.
On Thursday, November 3rd, students in the Fourth and Fifth Grade participated in the Hoops-for-Heart Program to raise money for the American Heart Association. During the event, students shot baskets and played different basketball games. The event was coordinated by Ms. Maher, one of Burns Avenue's Physical Education teachers.
This year's first broadcast of News 5 was made on Friday, November 4th. The broadcast team, made up of Fifth Graders, researched and wrote news stories that were shared with students over the public address system.
Students in Burns Avenue recently participated in a pumpkin decorating contest that was run by the Burns Avenue Student Council. Students who entered the contest did a wonderful job in transforming their pumpkins into all sorts of characters, animals, and treats.
On Tuesday, October 25, students in First, Second, and Third Grade participated in the Workout-for-Heart Program to raise money for the American Heart Association. During the event, students jumped rope, did sit-ups and push-ups, and exercised on a variety of equipment in the gym.
Students from each of the schools in the District participated in a ceremony to thank the members of the Board of Education for their hard work and dedication. The ceremony took place at the Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, October 19th.
Students in Burns Avenue's Fifth Grade traveled to Caumsett State Preserve on Tuesday, October 11. They spent a beautiful day learning about survival skills and cooperatively building a shelter. They also greatly enjoyed hiking through the preserve on Long Island's North Shore.
This year, students in Fifth Grade are again participating in a Peer Tutoring Program in Burns Avenue. The program, which is designed to provide additional support to designated Kindergarten students, gives the Fifth Graders an opportunity to work with the children before school each Monday.
This year, Burns Avenue again sent home a Summer Connections booklet with each child so that our students could practice the many skills that had been learned during the school year. Students who completed the booklet and returned it to school were given a certificate of accomplishment.
Twenty-three students in Burns Avenue were recently recognized as Students of the Month as part of a program to increase positive behavior in the school. During September, students were encouraged to demonstrate effort and citizenship. Teachers then selected students who demonstrated those qualities during the month.
The students in Burns Avenue greatly enjoyed celebrating Constitution Day on Friday, September 16th. Classes participated in a variety of activities that dealt with our government and the people who were responsible for writing and adopting the Constitution.
Students were welcomed back to school by the Burns Avenue staff on Wednesday, September 7. The students had the opportunity of meeting their new classmates and learning about some of the exciting things that will happen during the year.
