Dr. Carl Bonuso Carl Bonuso, Ed.D. is the retired Superintendent of Wantagh Schools, one of the few districts of its size in the United States with all of its five schools recognized as both New York State and United States Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence.  An award-winning veteran administrator and educator, he has been a guiding force in educational excellence and collaborative leadership.  He is a well-known and highly regarded Long Island educator whose many awards include being named Hofstra University’s PDK “Educator of the Year,” “Wantagh Citizen of the Year” by its Chamber of Commerce, and “Excellence in Educational Leadership Award” (given annually by the University Council of Educational Administrators to the top twenty five educators in the nation for their work in preparing aspiring school leaders).  

Dr. Bonuso served as the Interim Superintendent of Schools in Hicksville during the 2014-2015 school year.  In the summer of 2015, he was appointed officially as the Hicksville Superintendent of Schools where he has led the instructional and operational transformation of our schools.  New initiatives during this brief time in Hicksville include such exciting innovations as:  A District Pre-Kindergarten program, new Middle School Advisory and instructional programs, and a host of new high school electives and vocational education opportunities.  Indeed he was selected in 2015 by the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce as the Education Provider of the Year and in 2016 honored by the Hicksville Civic Association with its Community Service Award.

Dr. Bonuso has written numerous articles on topics ranging from “School/Business Partnerships,” to the “Image of a Leader,” appearing in such journals as Kappan, Psychology Today, and Today’s Education. He has led training and made presentations both locally and nationally in such areas as:  the new APPR mandates, effective schools research, creating a positive work environment, effective supervision of instruction, and shared leadership/decision making. In addition, he has served as an adjunct professor at Dowling College and SUNY Stony Brook, and is the former editor-in-chief of the highly regarded peer-reviewed journal, Long Island Educational Review.

Dr. Bonuso served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Artillery where his distinguished career earned him both the Army Commendation Medal and the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross. Dr. Bonuso came to us from the Sag Harbor Schools where he served as their Interim Superintendent, receiving numerous accolades to include the “Friend of Education” Award by NYSUT and the Sag Harbor Teacher Association.
